Business Writing Skills

Who hasn't read a report or letter from a senior executive that is riddled with grammatical or spelling errors? In today's rapid-fire telecommunication age, no employee can afford to be embarrassed by lack of basic business writing ability. Holt Business Writing helps teach how to write both accurately and concisely.

Our two-day curriculum serves as a valuable 'refresher course'. Several of our clients are using this course on a monthly basis as a requirement for all new hires.

Communication and Conflict

American psychologist Carl Rogers' Client Service Model (Empathy, Acceptance and Congruence) is presented as a framework for effective communication in this popular class. Participants view and critique two humorous video examples in terms of the Client Service Model. They define passive, aggressive and assertive communication and learn the 7 assertiveness skills. Participants take the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument in preparation for a discussion and exploration of the five conflict handling modes of competing, a voiding, accommodating, collaborating and compromising.

Communicating for Results

Communicating for Results is an in-depth program designed to build communication skills, not simply raise awareness. This long-running, popular course offers a unique communication model that encompasses a variety of key skills such as listening, reading the behaviors of others, identifying listening blocks, assertiveness, disarming conflict and managing interpersonal stress. Challenging drills and role-playing provide the practice required to build skill. Years later, participants report that they rely on communication skills gained in this program to help them respond to stressful situations in business and in their personal lives.

Conducting Performance Appraisals Refresher

Our one-half day program serves as a valuable refresher course for managers and supervisors who have been through the HOLT Supervisory I Series. Participants will take a look back at the full day of training (Conducting Performance Appraisals). They will discuss the performance management process and the supervisor's role

*Monitoring the employees' performance all year
* Gathering information on each employee
* Defining roles/responsibilities and goals with employees before the review process
* Delivering a "no surprise" review

Finally, participants will discuss the dos and don'ts of conducting performance appraisals and handling difficult situations.

Complete Communication

Viewed as a stand-alone program or as a follow up to ALS, this class challenges participants to search assertively for leadership opportunities. The program focuses on communication skills, the key ingredient in the leadership recipe. Experiential exercises increase awareness and build skills around active listening, body language, assertiveness and understanding "client" needs through questioning. This class employs the use of video, many small group exercises and role-play. The introduction to negotiating skills is usually a first for many participants and enjoyed thoroughly.

Minutes Made Easy

Although dictation skills are seldom required today, having a secretary or other administrative professional who can take good notes in a meeting is still a valuable asset. Even secretarial colleges rarely offer students this useful skill, and most "minute takers" use their "own systems." This one-day course gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take relevant notes and to present them as useful minutes. Participants will learn how to outline the purpose of the sections of the meeting and the minutes that meet the needs and expectations of the group; recognize the information to record in the minutes and take accurate notes; and draft minutes quickly and present information in logical order.

Length: 1 day

Presentation Skills

It is not difficult for most of us to make a presentation to an individual or a group. But it is not so easy to give a presentation that is engaging, thoughtful, informative and memorable. Holt Presentation Skills outlines how to build a speech from the very beginning that will assure a successful end result. This animated course will require intensive live and videotaped feedback. We will also address the use of visual aids, modern technology and how to manage Question and Answer sessions.

Producing Successful Meetings and Events

This popular workshop provides the latest techniques in planning and managing offsites, special events and meetings. Administrative employees are provided with the ammunition they need to execute polished and memorable events. The program addresses the five key points to successful event planning; identifies creative and unexpected event options; and provides opportunities for participants to practice negotiation skills with hotels, caterers and other vendors.

Topics covered in this program include: exploring the causes of stress, identifying life events that contribute to stress, assessing Type A versus Type B behavior, getting control of our lives and ways to elicit the relaxation response.
